The ‘Poltergeist Curse’

“Poltergeist,” has been long rumored to be featured at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights 2018 (HHN). Now, that we have the official announcement let’s dive into the urban legend  known as, ” The Poltergeist Curse.”

“The Poltergeist Curse,” is a popular rumor that the film series of the same name was cursed, due to the subject matter of the films. It is as if the evil spirits from the films have found a way to harm the actors who portrayed their victims.  The two most well know examples of this curse are the deaths of: 1) Dominique Dunne and 2) Heather O’Rourke.

The most tragic and down right eerie of these aforementioned deaths, would be that of Heather O’Rourke at the very young age of twelve years old.  The believers of this curse, also think the first film predicted O’Rourke’s demise.  O’Rourke’s character Carol Anne shared a bedroom with her brother Robbie.  During the various scenes of the bedroom in the movie, a poster for Superbowl 22 can be seen above Robbie’s bed.

Now, for the untrained eye this would appear just to be a normal decoration of any American boy’s room. However, “Poltergeist,” was released June 4th 1982 and Superbowl 22 occurred January 31st 1988 in San Diego, California between the Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos. Now here is where things get creepy. January 31st 1988, was also the day Heather O’Rourke became ill and could not hold any food down. The next morning O’Rourke’s parents attempted to take Heather to Rady Children’s Hospital. Unfortunately, while en route to the hospital Heather went into cardiac arrest and passed away.   For those of you that do not know, Rady Children’s Hospital is located in San Diego, California, the same very city that hosted Superbowl 22.  R.I.P Heather O’Rourke your light shined bright and left this world too soon.

Other events in this supposed curse include:

Dominique Dunne, who played the eldest daughter Dana in the movie, died on November 4, 1982, at age 22 after being beaten and strangled by her former boyfriend John Thomas Sweeney.  He was latter convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison, but was paroled after serving nearly four years.

Oliver Robins (who Robbie) was supposedly attacked on set by a animatronic clown. In the scene where he is struggling with the weird clown, it malfunctioned and literally started to choke him. Because the scene was meant to show a ‘real fight’, many members of the crew thought his reaction was just acting and it wasn’t until he started to pass out that crew members quickly intervened.  Robins survived the attack by the clown and is alive and well today and he doesn’t believe in the ‘curse’.

JoBeth Williams (who plays the mother), appeared in the infamous watery pit scene which was reportedly filled with real human skeletons and although no tragedy occurred to her, she reported felt that the set was haunted and the ghosts may have followed her home!
