AHS Set to Become the New TWD

Yep, you read that right, American Horror Story (yet to be announced by Universal) will soon take-up the place left by the departing zombie franchise and be welcomed back to HHN on an annual basis.  You also heard it here first!

For those who have not seen the series it is an anthology based horror television series created and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Described as a horror collection series, each season is conceived as a self-contained miniseries, following a different set of characters and settings, and a storyline with its own beginning, middle, and end.  Some plot elements are loosely inspired by true events.

So what’s happening?  We’re hearing that an announcement could be any day, in fact, as you’re reading this they’ve probably announced it.  ScareZone also has this trouble with getting announcements out!  The reason behind the lack of announcement on AHS is the fact that internally, the marketing department wanted to do a joint announcement on the 5th or 12th September with the Network announcing the new season of the show.  What with everyone questioning why the house has not been announced, leads us to think that the house will probably be announced any day now.  This limbo in announcements has effectively lead the house to become one of the best / worst kept secrets in the event’s history!

So what’ll be in the house?  The house will feature all the best scares from three different seasons.  The seasons will be: 1, 4 and 5.  Season One was called ‘Murder House’ and was released in 2011.  The story takes place in the present day and follows the Harmon family who move from Boston to Los Angeles and soon meet the former residents of their new home.

Season Four was ‘Freak Show’ (2014 – 15) which was about the quiet town of Jupiter, Florida and follows a struggling freak show led by Elsa Mars.  Decades have passed since the public has looked upon freak shows as a form of entertainment, but Elsa dreams of finding a home for her “monsters”, as well as her own fame.   The image of this season has been teased by us, other sites and HHN’s own Twitter handle.

The other season to feature will be Season Five’s ‘Hotel’ (2015 – 16).  Set in Los Angeles in the haunted, retro Hotel Cortez which was built to become a torture chamber for the customers by the founder James Patrick March. The wardens of the hotel include the 111-year-old vampire, Elizabeth Johnson, and the front sinister desk clerk and manager, Iris.

So what’s next?  Next year’s HHN27 will feature seasons 2, 3 and 6. ‘The Asylum’ (2012 – 2013), ‘The Coven’ (2013 – 2014) and the new unnamed Season 6, which will air this Fall.  Season Six is rumoured to be called ‘The Lost Colony’.  Whether these three seasons will be collected together in one house, multiple houses or on the streets is unknown.

The Walking Dead is set to leave this year’s HHN after an impressive record breaking five year run at the event.  From the information we have found it appears AHS is set to be with HHN for at least this and next year, with a future potential for more houses after this, effectively making AHS the new TWD!

So who is excited about AHS finally coming to HHN?

HUGE Dedicated HHN Store Returns for #HHN26

That’s right folks, a dedicated HHN store will return for Halloween Horror Nights this year.  Introduced last year in the former Aftermath store inside the Twister attraction, the store was an immediate hit, selling out of many of its lines.

The house which served as part museum of props from past HHNs to specialist store selling all manner of HHN goods, was popular with fans of the event and the general pubic alike.   It sold general HHN merch such as hoodies, tees and shot glasses but mixed it up with the sale of props and limited edition items.

So what’s happening this year I hear you cry?  Well, HHN is going bigger and better than ever before!  Could you expect any less from them?

The new store will be located here inside the Macy’s Store.  Which has had a number of different uses over the years…

The store was originally used to house the The Screen Test Home Video Adventure which would take willing park guests and transform them into their own episode of Star Trek, featuring all the classic Trek actors.  In 1996 it was replaced by The Islands of Adventure Preview Center.

This now empty space will be transformed into another amazing entry into HHN lore, again will feature a wide selection of props and sets whilst selling what is rumored to be the biggest ever selection of HHN merchandise.

Expect props, one of a kind pieces, limited edition items, lithographs, posters; plus the usual t-shirts, shot glasses, hoodies, vinyls, masks, cups, mugs etc.

Are you excited for the new store?  Will you be buying lots of new merchandise?  Do you collect the tees?  Let us know in the comments!

Secret 10th House Announced

Late last night at the HHNU offices we were holding our typical editorial meetings when suddenly news came over the interwebs from our sources that a 10th House was to be announced for HHN, this was our initial response:

You see, Universal has a long history flirting with a secret/extreme/up-charge house, a history that has seen this house never come to fruition, that is until now.

If you want to read about this mythical house that never was, you can here.

So here’s what we know so far…

We believe it has been constructed in Soundstage 19, which is a former stage occupied by Nickelodeon and a studio which has never housed HHN before.  Studio 19 is also HUGE.

Tickets will be $49.99 plus tax per person and teams of four will experience the house at a time.  Discounts will be levied for annual passholders holders.

Tickets for the general public will be on sale beginning August 23.  Universal Orlando Annual Passholders can purchase tickets beginning August 16.  Bookings can be made after these dates by calling: 407-224-7840.

So what is it?

“The Repository” is an exclusive, limited-time attraction with an entirely unique storyline that will pave the way for even more brand new, best-in-class experiences across Universal Orlando Resort. Throughout this extended, heart-pounding adventure, guests will explore highly thematic physical environments and interact with real-life characters – all while working in small teams to solve a dark mystery unfolding before them. Universal Orlando is working with VRstudios (VRcade), a Bellevue, Washington company specializing in unique VR experiences. The company designed a first-of-its-kind VR platform to be used inside this experience.

Say what now?

Expect VR goggles, physical sets with real scareactors, add into the mix paranormal encounters that only your goggles can pick up with a peppering of theming from the Legendary Truth.

So who has created this up-charge house?

VRstudios is the FIRST and ONLY VR company offering a wireless-streamed system and a collection of capabilities that includes full motion, simultaneous multiple users in the same physical and virtual space, enhanced spectator capabilities and 1:1 tracking – all to provide a fully immersive and interactive VR experience. VRcade is the gaming and entertainment brand of VRstudios. Launched in 2014, VRstudios is based in Bellevue, Washington.

Universal has said:

All of this is set in a centuries old warehouse where paranormal and supernatural artifacts have been collected and stored for hundreds of years. Recently though, the secretive organization behind this practice has installed state-of-the-art technology that allows spectral transportation into paranormal realms.

Until now, the supernatural has infiltrated our world on occasions labeled “hauntings.” Now, and for the first time ever, we will send you across the SDP (spectral dark portal) directly into those terrifying environments. I wish you a safe journey because what happens to you on the other side is irreversible.

Here are the headsets and potential weapons (if Universal goes down that route):

Here is a photo of how we believe the Warehouse may look:

And here’s a Zombie for a similar house this company made:

Are you happy about this house be chargeable for an additional fee?  Do you think Universal have gone too far charging even more?  Or are you super pumped and cannot wait to experience this one in a life time house?  Let us know in the comments!

In-depth first look inside Ghost Town: The Curse of Lightning Gulch

Yesterday Halloween Horror Nights announced the original content houses for this season, and today, we get to take an inside look at one of them……

Ghost Town: The Curse of Lightning Gulch is an old western themed haunted house that tells the story of a town called Lightning Gulch that was an olden town, remiscent of classic American Wild West and Spaghetti Western films, but it holds a dark secret. Legend has it that the town only appears when there’s lightning striking the land. The town is deserted, and full of dead bodies. One would wonder what terrible things happened here.

The story tells that people once came to this town searching to make a fortune in gold. They indeed found gold, but little did they know what else fate had in store for them.

The explorers found death along with their riches. The town, as legend has it, was swallowed by a fierce thunderstorm. The town, and its residents, disappeared from existence and its people were doomed to haunt the town as ghosts for the rest of time.

The town is filled to the brim with the explorer’s dead bodies. Visitors to the town will see many things familiar in Wild West settings such as a saloon, an undertaker’s store that sells coffins and tombstones, an oats and grains vendor, wagons and stagecoaches, as well as horse posts and troughs.

The characters that inhabit the town are that of the spirits of the dead that haunt it’s every corner. These ghosts continue to have an intense lust for gold and to protect their treasures. Guided by their own greed, they want you to join them in their quaint little town, forever, searching for gold for the rest of eternity!

The Experience

Ghost Town is a unique haunt experience in that it utilizes lightning to illuminate it’s scenes. Every strike of lightning, along with it’s accompanying sound of thunder, brightens the scenes and gives you a brief glimpse of what’s around you, but your eyesight is immediately deminished the second afterwards. The scenes all contain dark colors and tones, making it difficult to see in the dark. The lightning strikes constantly, yet without rythmn. Each strike is random, yet expected and familiar. The scares utilize these lightning strikes to their advantage.

Smells of rain, hay, and death fill the air as you walk through corridors, alleyways, and storefronts of the town. You will be constantly haunted by the town’s ghostly inhabitants at every corner. The lightning gives their souls new life, making them re-appear in their glowing, ghostly forms. Will you escape the town to live another day on safer grounds? The only way to find out for certain is by daring to enter the Ghost Town itself, and experience the Curse of Lightning Gulch for yourself!

Are you ready to brave the town of Lightning Gulch? Let us know how excited you are in the comments!

He was ‘coming’, he was ‘still coming’ and now, Krampus Arrives at Halloween Horror Nights!

We’ve been saying since 2015 that Krampus was coming and now *finally* after months of waiting, official news has come this weekend that Krampus will indeed be at HHN on both coasts this year – hurray!

Here is our February blog where we spelt out exactly why Krampus would be at HHN26.

So ’tis the season for Krampus as Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort bring the terrifying dark Christmas legend to life in an all-new HHN maze beginning September 16, 2016.

The creative minds behind the nation’s best and most extreme Halloween events unleash the wrath of Krampus, Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures’ Christmas-themed horror film co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty, in sinister new HHN mazes for 2016 which will appear at both the Orlando and Hollywood events.  Below is a photo of the Construction of the latter so far…

The dead of winter sets the stage for the terror that’s about to unfold one cold, dank and dreary Christmas Eve as the fabled anthropomorphic “half-goat, half-demon” horned creature emerges to terrorize those devoid of holiday spirit. In scenes lifted from the film, guests will navigate the dysfunctional Engel family home to encounter the evil ancient spirit of Krampus – the dark shadow of Saint Nicholas – and his band of Dark Elves and sinister Gingerbread Men, who cause the family to fight to see the light of day. (This we literally cannot wait to see!)

Additional details about Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights will be revealed soon. For more information about Halloween Horror Nights at either Universal Studios Hollywood or Universal Orlando Resort, visit their official site at www.HalloweenHorrorNights.com.  Or keep watching our blog and Facebook page for all the latest (and earliest!) news for the event…

Horror Nights Etiquette: Conduct on the Promenade

Last week we brought you the first installment of our series on proper etiquette for anyone attending horror nights (read it here). This week we dive into proper behavior on the streets of universal in and between the scarezones….

First and Foremost:

Drink responsibly at Halloween Horror Nights. A common complaint among average HHN guests is rowdy drunks being loud and just generally being nuisances to everyone around them. Some people even go as far as to deciding to never return to the event because of drunken people’s behavior.

This doesn’t mean don’t drink at all, but it’s important to know your limits. You will find that the behaviors discussed here can be controlled by limiting alcohol consumption to reasonable amounts.

Interacting with Scareactors

When walking in scarezones, it is important to behave properly amongst the scareactors. Some may say the below guidelines are all common sense, but unfortunately, we often see people act disrespectfully on Universal’s streets.

  • Do not chase scareactors

Not only is this dangerous to basically everyone, but can be seen as threatening.

  • Do not remove a scareactor’s mask

This is assault and battery, and it will get you familiar with the nearby Orlando Police officers on duty very quickly.

  • Do not try to scare the actors

Sneaking around the actors and trying to frighten them is not only annoying to the actors, but it’s dangerous to the other guests and could even cause a scene between you and the actor.

  • Do not grope, molest, or otherwise touch the actors.

Although this was said in the previous installment, it should be reiterated. Last year there were a couple actors that quit working the event because they were molested or fondled while on the job. Most notable were two actresses, one who played Carrie and another that portrayed a Camp Crystal Lake counselor in their scarezone, Hollywood Die-In.

  • Do not use profanity if an actor refuses a photo

Not all HHN scareactor coordinators allow their actors to take photos. Some actors even would rather take photos with guests, but it’s not always up to them. Don’t take it personal and verbally harass them.

  • Do not ask an actor to touch you for a photo

Some inebriated guests request that the actors grab their private parts for photos. This is over the line and is not tolerated.

Conduct while Queued

Lines at horror nights can get quite lengthy, and it’s understandable to get anxious. As mentioned in our guide for first time visitors, posted earlier this year (read it here), you may choose to play a game on your smartphone with your party such as “Heads Up” to help pass the time. HHN released an official trivia game last year that quizzed players on HHN history and lore, and they could even compete against other players, and was available in the App Store or Google Play and advertised on the park maps. On occasion though, we see people get quite rowdy while waiting in line, causing a disturbance to those around them. For those that find themselves getting impatient while waiting in long lines, keep in mind the following:

  • Do not snap at the staff and house attendants

The employees assigned to sweep cigarette butts, pick up cups and trash, and oversee the queue organization are there to help the event run smoothly. If they request that you don’t sit on the ropes, or to not smoke in line, please do not yell, be couteous and respect park rules.

  • Stay in line

It is important that you stay in line for the entire wait duration. Although the houses with the longest lines may have porta-pottys, it is highly advisable to go the bathroom before getting in line for any house. Even if you left the line to go to the bathroom and are coming back to join your party, it can easily be seen as skipping the line.

  • Do not sing or chant loudly

It may be fun for you and your friends, but not everyone wants to hear it.

Why this matters

Not only does this etiquette lesson concern the scareactors, but this time around it concerns your fellow guests at the event.

There are other people around you, and they want to have as much fun as you. Don’t ruin it for them by acting like a rowdy, loud, obnoxious individual that can’t control themselves. Let’s make HHN26 a blast for all and behave yourselves out there!

HHN Needs Leatherfaces!

That’s correct, you heard us right.  HHN26 NEEDS MORE Leatherfaces.

We’ve heard it from various sources that HHN needs more budding actors to apply to be the next skin wearing maniac that is, Leatherface.

So if you like wearing human skin, making chairs out of human bone and love welding a chainsaw…. well you better check yourself into your local mental health centre as this is not the place for you.  However, if you love HHN, love creating some memorable scares and are hardworking, then this is definitely the place for you to be.

Applications can be found HERE.

Universal has the following conditions…only ONE audition is needed to be considered for Halloween Horror Nights. Candidates will remain in consideration until the event is fully staffed.

  • Please arrive at your scheduled time to ensure appropriate audition flow. Please do not arrive more than 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Late arrivals may be subject to appointment cancellation. If you arrive early you will be asked to wait and/or return at your scheduled audition time. You may experience a wait before you are checked in for the audition. Please allow 2-4 hours for the audition process when scheduling your appointment.
  •  If possible, please print a copy of your appointment confirmation and bring with you to the audition.
  • Audition will be held at Human Resources: 1000 Universal Studios Plaza, Orlando, FL 32819
  • All candidates must be at least 18 years of age and able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

If you got cast or are thinking of applying, let us know in comments – we LOVE hearing your HHN stories!

50 Days Left!! + The Carnage Returns stage….Returns

A bit of an update for you guys

The Countdown Really Gets Underway

There are officially only 50 days left until Halloween Horror Nights 26. Now is the time of year when people really start talking about horror nights, even those who aren’t die hard fans. Universal Studios social media pages, such as the annual passholder group, become riddled with posts about HHN and not much else. We’re getting down to the wire, and it’s time to get excited if you aren’t already! 25 days from now, we should know everything Chance has in store for us this season.

The Stage Rises Again

If you recall last year’s HHN25, Jack and Chance had a stage show near the center of the park in front of Mel’s Drive-In called “The Carnage Returns.” The show featured multiple victims dying by Jack’s hands in multiple, creative ways, with Chance by Jack’s side throughout the show.

HHN25’s “The Carnage Returns”

Last year, the stage for the show started construction in early July (earlier than this year), and was decorated with props and set pieces. Guests would walk by the stage fully set daily, which provided an interesting sneak peek at that years Horror Nights.

Last year’s stage in early August

While the stage was decorated, it was used during late nights for show rehearsals from mid August to opening night. The stage was completely stripped and was used for the “Rock the Universe” concerts which took place mid-late August, and then was very quickly re-dressed back to the Carnage Returns show.

The stage in its current, early stages of construction. Photo taken July 27th, 2016

Given last year’s use of this stage, it is pretty reasonable to assume that this stage will be used for HHN26. Will Chance get her own show this year on this same stage that she shared with the ringmaster himself last year? Given that this year is essentially a “sequel” to last year’s event, it isn’t far from possible.

69 Days … Dudes!

Hey guys, Rob here again. I wanted to start of by saying thank you all for reading and following the page. Also if you haven’t listened or subscribed to the Scarezone podcast please do, this week’s interview with Mike Aiello (HHN Creative Director) was amazingly insightful for any HHN fans out there!  I particularly liked the spoilers he provided for The Exorcist house – man I can’t wait to see that house!!  Click HERE to listen now.

With just 69 days left until opening night what do we know for sure and what do we have left to speculate over!? We do know for sure that there will be nine mazes this year, but we’ve known that for a while now. Not all nine houses have been announce yet and unlike last year, none of the online speculation lists have really gone as viral.

History was made this year when Universal made its first house announcement with Texas Chainsaw Massacre in April. Rapidly followed by The Exorcist a month later. Last month we were shown our new HHN icon with the announcement of Chance! The Icon announcement also informed us that Chance will have her own house and scarezone. Also announced already is the return of The Walking Dead, which was met with a wide range of emotions from the HHN Community as always, though as Mike said in the interview it is always 50/50 with that one!

Yesterday we were presented with our 5th house for the event; Michael Myers will be returning to HHN after a one year break. Halloween 2 will be coming to the parade building which is a soundstage known to have held rather large houses in past. The announcement was received with mixed reviews with some fans thinking it was too soon to have the movie Slasher return after only a year break, though in our opinion here at HHNU we love seeing Mr. Myers come back!

With the announcement of 5 of our 9 houses we can only speculate from here on. We do know that our code name “Cobweb” will still be a house and it will be an original so there really isn’t much to speculate on there. Bill and Ted are expected to make a triumphant appearance in their usual stage show which will be their 25th anniversary (as they did not appear at the event until HHN 2). The picture below shows us what we know so far as far as house locations goes.

With little to no word being said on scarezones, we can only speculate on what we will see featured in the streets of HHN this year along with Chance and her minions. Some people think that the Purge will make a reappearance but with the recent horrific events in Orlando last month many think that idea has been scrapped or severely toned down.

I would love to speculate on what will be coming to HHN but I don’t want to say anything that might give away too much so what do you think we will see at 26?
